I don’t want anyone to know that I’m in treatment, do you tell anyone that I’m in treatment?  We would be happy to discuss this with you in detail.  Generally speaking, if you are paying using insurance, we will have to share your medical information with your insurer.  However, if you are a cash patient, we do not have to share your information with your insurer.  If you are transferring from another doctor or clinic we may ask for your consent to notify them that you have transferred care to us or request records.  We do not share your medical information with any family members unless you request for us to include them in your care.  We do not share your medical information with your employer unless you ask us to do so.  There are rare instances in which a duty to warn/report applies.  When the patient has communicated to the treating physician an actual threat of physical violence against a clearly identified or reasonably identifiable potential victim or victims, and then the treating physician may communicate the threat only to the potential victim or victims, a law enforcement agency, or the parent or guardian of a minor who is identified as a potential victim.  If there is any mention of child abuse we have a duty to report.  If we are court ordered to turn over records we must comply.  Your privacy is of our topmost priority and we will do all that is in our power to keep your information private and confidential.
